Healthy Smiles Dentistry: The Bennett Legacy

They were the words no wife, best friend and mother of three ever wants to hear.

“There’s nothing else we could do,” the doctor said.

When Dr. Kinyatta Bennett lost her husband suddenly due to a brain aneurysm, she had no idea where to pick up the pieces of what used to be a happy home. And Healthy Smiles Dentistry seemed to be a dream twisting in the wind.

“I still was in denial, trying to figure out ways to keeps him here,” Bennett said.

Last November, after spending several days in the hospital Dr. Christopher Bennett was expected to go home but suffered a second brain bleed, from which he never recovered. In times of grief and loss, it’s hard to perceive that there is a future wherein which the plans for our lives still hold true.

“I had people asking: what do you want to do? It was something I had put off. I could barely get out of bed. But I knew it was something my husband wouldn't want me to throw away. It was something that we drew out on a napkin in Pennsylvania. This was something we named together back in dental school."

The couple had met when both interviewed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry and the two were attached at the hip ever since. "We became best friends. We didn't see it going anywhere from there, but our classmates did," Bennett said.

Christopher proposed on Graduation Day, May 21, 2010, and they married on May 28, 2011. Bennett’s mother died on a May 28, when Bennett’s was 11. She decided to marry on that day in honor of her mother.

It is the legacies we carryout that are our redeemers, an enduring spirit that comforts us and compels us to push forward.

Bennett recalls one of her most vulnerable moments dealing with the aftermath: Visiting the new building for the first time after her husband's death. "That was the first step. I take it one day at a time, one step at a time," she said.

After much time and gentle perseverance their dream has become a reality.
